Are you thinking about buying new workout clothes? With such a competitive market, you can choose exactly what you want at the price you want. But remember, good quality costs more money. However, it will last longer, making it a steal in the end. Here is a list of things I look for when making the purchase.
1. Do they wick sweat?
I live in the South, so this is a big one for me. The body works hard to cool itself by producing sweat, your clothes should enhance this process, not stop it. Moisture-wicking fabrics help keep you cool and dry during workouts. This fabric is more breathable, which adds comfort and comfort means better workouts.
Bonus: Moisture-wicking fabrics feature stain release properties that can require less water and detergent when washing. They are good for the environment!
2. Are they sun protective?
I didn't even know this was a thing until discovering Tri Sirena. Now it is a must have! Sunscreen wears off and having extra protection from the sun is essential. Why not have it in something you are already wearing?!? We workout to make our bodies healthier. This means protecting our skin too!
Fun Fact: Did you know Tri Sirena's mission includes providing physician approved, sun protective, quality clothing for all level athletes? Spectacular!
3. Are they see through when you bend over?!?
We have all seen it or experienced it. You know, the bicyclist accidentally mooning everyone behind them because their bike shorts are too worn out or a person stretching in yoga pants that are not quite thick enough. Fabric should stretch with you.
Tip: Whenever you purchase a new pair of workout bottoms, test them out in a mirror. If you can see through them, go with a different brand. If the fabric cannot perform the simple task of keeping you covered, it is likely to fail in other areas.
4. Do they provide the right support?
Support is crucial. Exercise clothes need to grip, stay and hold all the right places. What do I mean? All of our human parts need to be the right type of “contained” for whatever workout is being done. The last thing you want is chafing because clothing is too loose. A good pair of workout clothes should reduce any bounce and not slide up during movement.
Suggestion: Try out different sizes and brands. What works for your body might not work for someone else. If you feel good in what you are wearing, you are more likely to complete your workout goals.
5. Are there pockets?
Pockets! Yes! I love pockets. Since I started running in pants with pockets, it is now a must have for me. Having a place to store your workout essentials in your clothes, keeps it simple. When it is quick and easy, there is less room for excuses and more motivation.
Did you know: Tri Sirena's Tri Shorts have pockets?!??! Life changing! Morphing during a brick workout has never been easier!
6. Is it comfortable?
You know the saying, we should be comfortable in our own skin. Well, we should be comfortable in our workout clothes too. They should bend, stretch and move with us. Physical fitness overall should induce good feelings. If something is squeezing too tight or if they're uncomfortable, it will inevitably end up in the will never wear pile in the back of the closet.
Advice: With busy lives, there are already a trillion excuses not to workout. Don't let disliking your clothes be one.
7. Will they last?
If your clothing is checking off everything on this list, it most likely comes with a price tag to match. The reality is quality materials cost more money. If they last, they are worth it.
Example: I spent $140 on my long sleeve Tri Sirena swimsuit. I have worn it for lake, ocean and pool swims. I can conservatively estimate, I have worn it around 50 times since I purchased it last year. That's less than $3.00 per use, my skin was protected from the sun, I felt great wearing it and it is still in new condition. When making the effort to exercise, we are investing in ourselves and we want it to last. Our clothes should too. In the long run, it is a lot cheaper than purchasing multiple subpar suits.
There you have it. My workout gear must haves.
