Leia’s longest run to date is a 14-mile trail run that we did together during Ironman training in Central Oregon. She lets me know when she has pent up energy by getting into things that she shouldn’t, like garbage cans. I train mostly by myself, Leia is my constant companion on the road running and in my daily life.
I was feeling empty and lost. At the same time, I was unhappy with post-college weight gain. So I started running. I was never a runner so I started small, working myself up to a solid mile without stopping. And of course, when you're running you need new shoes right?! So I went to the local running store and ended up signing up for there beginner 10k group.
At 33 years old, I was picking out my husband’s casket and looking for a burial plot. Needing to sort out my feelings and release all the anger and hurt that was bottled up, running became my outlet. I needed alone time for the earlier years to help with my healing process, but I now needed the friendships that went with group running/training for my marathon.
