It is better to look back on life and say: “I can’t believe I did that,” than to look back and say: “I wish I did that.” So, today I pulled the trigger and registered for my first 70.3!!
In February, I started talking with Ryan (my husband) about future races, I knew I wanted to have something on our calendar beyond the Lavaman in April and I knew I wanted to go bigger. Call me crazy, but I think that planning for a race and training makes people better, not just on the race course, but in life – I feel like not only am I physically healthier and stronger, but mentally too, therefore being a better wife, friend, daughter, sister, coworker, etc.
So what kind of future race fun do we sign up for? For a moment, I thought I wanted to run an ultra because my brother completed the Pony Express 50 miler when he was my age, so I tried to convince him to do another with me this year, but then started to realize I don’t love running THAT much and I probably couldn’t even convince myself to do it! Ryan reminded me that what I do love THAT much is the multisport aspect of Tri’s so why not start looking at a Half Ironman? Racing consistently for 70.3 miles is an overwhelming thought (so is running for 50, ha!), but I decided I was up for the challenge.
I have known for over a month now which race I wanted to do. The Beach to Battleship Half Iron in Wilmington, NC in October. For a few reasons, the number one reason being that my parents live a few hours from the race and I love the idea of them being there, cheering me on and spending time together after. I’ve heard great things about the course from you guys out there in our Tri community! The best part of all? My husband is registered too! We are at very different athletic levels, but I look forward to going on long rides and swims with him. Even better than completing this racing milestone by myself, I’ll be completing it with my best friend!
I’m pumped. I’m stoked. I’m ready for this next adventure!
It’s a new challenge and I know I’m going to rock it.
Ready or not Wilmington – the countdown has officially begun!
