Before we get into the fun stuff, a little disclaimer: although there are some health benefits to certain wine, this is not a "more equals better" situation. If you are going to drink, the World Health Organization suggests "low-risk alcohol consumption of no more than two standard drinks per day with at least two non-drinking days during the week. Here, one standard drink is defined as 10 grams of pure ethanol." -The Washington Post
TRI NOW. WINE LATER.
Is there anything better than FINALLY sitting down on your couch with a glass of wine at the end of a rough week?
Yep. Knowing that glass of red (or white) wine can offer you some serious health benefits. After all, you trained hard all week and the reward is a little sweeter when it's also helping your body recover. So what exactly are the health benefits of wine?
Wine likes to pick fights with free radicals.
The antioxidants found in wine fight off problem-causing free radicals like nobody's business. A free radical is a mischievous molecule that can cause cancer, aging, and disease. So antioxidants are our friends! White wine is our preference when looking for the best source of antioxidants.
Wine wants to help you fight and prevent cancer.
Free radicals and cancer go hand in hand. A glass of wine can reduce your risk of colon and breast cancer.
Wine is linked to improved memory.
While white wine boasts more antioxidants; red wine contains super-ingredient resveratrol, which is responsible for tons of the health benefits of wine. Memory, for one! Studies have shown that after consuming resveratrol, participants had better word retention and faster brain performance.
Wine improves your skin.
When consumed orally, resveratrol works to stop the growth of acne-causing bacteria. It doesn't work the same way when applied topically! When used in combination with benzoyl peroxide it works even better.
Wine has also been shown to help prevent:
Catching a cold
Stroke and blood clots
