5 Reasons We Reckon You Might Enjoy Ironman 70.3 Augusta
We are so excited to be heading back to Georgia. It seems like just yesterday we were setting up in Ironman Village for Augusta 2017. Where does the time go? This is one of our favorite events of the year! A tasty appetizer before our adventures in Kona...
What Makes Augusta Special
Good old southern hospitality. This is what can really make or break a race experience. The volunteers in Augusta are full of smiles, encouraging words and can be found at aid stations a-plenty.
The down-current swim. The Savannah River is where you begin your 70.3 journey! The swim is usually wetsuit legal, but there are no guarantees. 2017 was wetsuit optional and many athletes chose to race in a skinsuit. Got questions about wetsuits? Curious about other options? Check out The Ultimate Wetsuit Guide.
Pancake run. This run course is F-L-A-T. Yay! Two loops through downtown Augusta also guarantees plenty of opportunities to see your loved ones.
Perfect for beginners. See above! Uplifting volunteers, downstream swim and a flat run make this course ideal for your first HIM.
Chance for a Championship. If you're curious, the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Augusta will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.
Tips to Visit Augusta Siren Style
Arrive on Friday. The race takes place on Sunday, but trust us...you want to get there Friday. Get checked in at the Convention Center then take a stroll around Ironman Village. Shop for some new gear and (duh) come to visit us at the Tri Sirena booth!
Swim for free. There is no pre-event open water swim, but it's all good. There are two YMCAs in the area that will let you use their pool for free! Just make sure to bring your Ironman wristband to qualify.
Get your grub on. There are SO many yummy restaurants in Augusta, but here are a few of our favorites:
Boozy Brunch: Füse Restaurant (get the Bloody Mary with shrimp on the rim, or enjoy a flight of Beermosas!)
Refuel with a Burger: Whiskey Bar Kitchen (American and Japanese pub food, along with a pretty serious list of burgers!)
Keep it Classy for Dinner: Frog Hollow Tavern (Worth the price from what we've heard, head this way for fresh seafood, spot-on service and the best pork chop of your life.)
Green Athlete: The Bee's Knees (Vegan options, tapas, cocktails and the satisfaction of supporting a local business! This place is passionate about all things sustainable, responsible and local.)
Sweet Tooth: The Boll Weevil Cafe & Sweetery (Cake, cake, cake, cake, cake! Turtle cheesecake, lemon cake, banana creme, red velvet, strawberry...pretty sure they have actual food there, but we're too distracted by the delicious desserts!)
There you have it! All the reasons you need to race in Augusta, Georgia. If you're going to be in the area this year, come by our booth in Ironman Village at the Augusta Convention Center to check out all our new gear!
